We value your privacy and are committed to protecting your personal information. This notice outlines how we collect, use, and store the information you provide to us.
Information We Collect
There are no accounts on this site and you never need to register to use it, so we hold very little about you. What we do collect falls into three groups.
- Things you type in yourself: your name and email address when you leave a comment, subscribe to the newsletter or use the contact form, along with whatever you write in them. Leaving a star rating on a recipe records the rating only.
- Technical information collected automatically: your IP address, browser and device type, operating system, approximate location based on that IP address, the pages you visit and the site you arrived from. This comes from our analytics and advertising providers rather than from us directly.
- Usage data: aggregated measurements such as how long pages take to load, how far down a page people scroll and which sections they reach. We use this to work out which recipes need improving. It is not tied to your name.
How We Use Your Information
We collect both personal and non-personal information for the following purposes:
- To Provide and Operate Our Services: Ensuring the functionality and security of our services.
- To Reply to You: Answering comments, questions and messages you send us.
- To Communicate with You: Sending you service-related notices, personalised messages, or promotional content.
- To Improve Our Services: Creating aggregated statistical data and insights to enhance our services.
- To Comply with Legal Obligations: Adhering to applicable laws, regulations, and agreements.
Advertising and Third-Party Services
We display advertising and use analytics on this site. Third-party vendors - currently Mediavine and Grow.me - and their partners use cookies and similar technologies to collect data such as your IP address, device and browser type, and your interactions, in order to serve and measure personalised advertising based on your visits to this and other websites. We also use Google Analytics and Jetpack / WordPress.com Stats for audience measurement, and we participate in the Amazon Associates affiliate programme, which uses cookies to attribute purchases made through our links.
You can learn more and opt out of personalised advertising via Google Ads Settings, the Digital Advertising Alliance, or Your Online Choices (EU/UK). Where required, a consent banner is shown before advertising and analytics cookies are set, and we aim to honour Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. California residents may exercise a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” choice through the consent controls provided on the site.
Data Storage and Security
Our website is hosted on the WordPress.com platform. WordPress.com provides an online platform that allows us to share content with you. Your data may be stored through WordPress.com’s data storage, databases, and general applications, and it is protected by secure servers behind a firewall.
Communication
We only ever contact you by email, and only for these reasons:
- Replying to a comment, a question or a message you sent us.
- Sending the newsletter, if you have subscribed to it. Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link and one click is enough.
- Notifying you of replies to your comment, if you ticked that box when you commented.
Who We Share Information With
We do not sell your personal information and we do not pass your email address to anyone for their own marketing. Information reaches these providers because of how the site is built:
- WordPress.com and Jetpack (Automattic), who host the site and run the comment form, the contact form, the newsletter and the visitor statistics.
- Mediavine and Grow.me, who serve the advertising, as described above.
- Google, for Google Analytics, and for Search Console which reports on how the site performs in search results.
- Amazon, where you follow one of our affiliate links, so that a purchase can be attributed to us.
- Anyone we are legally required to disclose information to.
How Long We Keep It
- Comments and their names and email addresses stay published with the recipe indefinitely, because they are part of the page. Ask us and we will delete yours.
- Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe.
- Contact form messages are kept for as long as we need to deal with what you asked, and are then deleted.
- Google Analytics data is kept for 14 months and then deleted automatically.
- Advertising and statistics data is held by those providers under their own retention policies, which are set out in their privacy notices.
Your Rights
If you are in the UK or the EU, data protection law gives you the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, to have it corrected if it is wrong, to have it deleted, to object to it being used, and to ask us to restrict how it is used. You can also withdraw consent for advertising and analytics cookies at any time using the privacy settings link, and unsubscribe from the newsletter with the link in any email.
To exercise any of these, email chefsbinge@gmail.com and we will deal with it within one month. If you are not happy with how we handle it, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
If you are in California, you have the right to know what personal information is collected, to ask for it to be deleted, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell personal information for money. Use the same email address above, or the Do Not Sell or Share option in the privacy settings.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We reserve the right to update this privacy policy at any time. Please review it frequently. Any changes will take effect immediately upon posting on our website. If we make significant changes, we will notify you here to keep you informed about what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances we may disclose it.
